Spierings Mobile Cranes developed the world's first hybrid mobile crane, known as the 'SK487-AT3 eDrive' or the 'CityBoy'. As part of bringing this innovative vehicle to market, Spierings needed to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements while maintaining the highest standards of safety for operators and the surrounding environment.
To support future vehicle developments, Spierings set out to review and strengthen its risk assessment process, with a specific focus on the functional safety aspects of the crane's powertrain.
A critical review of the safety processen
To achieve this, Spierings was looking for a partner that could provide an independent and critical review of its approach and support the evaluation of its safety protocols. VDL ETS proved to be the right partner for this task.
By performing a gap analysis of the existing risk assessment process, VDL ETS helped Spierings evaluate how risks related to the functional safety of the vehicle were identified and managed. The expertise of the VDL ETS team not only confirmed that Spierings was on the right track, but also provided valuable insights to further improve testing methodologies, safety procedures and development guidelines.
