Spierings
Strengthening functional safety in mobile cranes

Supporting the world's first hybrid mobile crane

Spierings Mobile Cranes developed the world's first hybrid mobile crane, known as the 'SK487-AT3 eDrive' or the 'CityBoy'. As part of bringing this innovative vehicle to market, Spierings needed to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements while maintaining the highest standards of safety for operators and the surrounding environment.

To support future vehicle developments, Spierings set out to review and strengthen its risk assessment process, with a specific focus on the functional safety aspects of the crane's powertrain.

A critical review of the safety processen

To achieve this, Spierings was looking for a partner that could provide an independent and critical review of its approach and support the evaluation of its safety protocols. VDL ETS proved to be the right partner for this task.

By performing a gap analysis of the existing risk assessment process, VDL ETS helped Spierings evaluate how risks related to the functional safety of the vehicle were identified and managed. The expertise of the VDL ETS team not only confirmed that Spierings was on the right track, but also provided valuable insights to further improve testing methodologies, safety procedures and development guidelines.

''A valuable collaboration with an eye for safety and quality."

Dennis van Es
Supervisor Support Desk, Spierings Manufacturing

Building on a strong foundation

Spierings looks back on a highly positive collaboration with VDL ETS. From the start of the project, a clear project scope was established and the right specialists were involved. The collaboration was characterized by a structured and transparent approach, combined with professional and constructive communication throughout the process.

Thanks to the technical expertise of VDL ETS and the clear alignment during the preparation phase, Spierings was able to make well-informed decisions and further strengthen its internal processes. The project provided valuable insights that will support future vehicle developments and contribute to continuous improvements in functional safety.

As a result, Spierings recommends VDL ETS as a reliable and knowledgeable partner in the field of safety and technical support. The combination of technical expertise, commitment and a collaborative approach helped reinforce both confidence and quality within the organization.
