Validating the future of high-performance batteries

The challenge

For the development of its high-performance battery system, InMotion required a testing partner capable of validating battery technology at every stage of development. The goal was not only to assess the performance of individual cells, but also to safely test a complete 800-volt battery pack under demanding operating conditions.

A key challenge was finding a nearby facility with the expertise and infrastructure to perform high-power charging and discharging tests while ensuring safety, reliability and reproducibility.

The VDL ETS approach

VDL ETS supported InMotion throughout the entire validation process, providing testing capabilities from cell level to complete battery pack level.

Cell testing

  • Characterisation of battery cell performance
  • Fast-charging and high-power charge/discharge testing
  • Thermal behaviour analysis under varying conditions
  • Validation of performance and reliability

Module testing

  • Evaluation of thermal interaction between cells
  • Monitoring of voltage distribution and drift
  • Assessment of cooling performance
  • Generation of insights for design optimisation

Battery pack testing

  • Validation of the complete 800-volt battery system
  • High-power charging and discharging under realistic loads
  • Verification of cooling and safety systems
  • Testing under representative operating scenarios

The result

By combining advanced test facilities with hands-on engineering support, VDL ETS enabled InMotion to validate critical design assumptions using real test data. The structured approach provided valuable insights into battery performance, thermal management and system reliability, helping to accelerate development and reduce technical risk.

The collaboration allowed InMotion to move confidently from concept validation to full-system testing, supporting the development of the next generation of high-performance battery technology.
