As the transport sector moves towards zero-emission mobility, hydrogen fuel cell technology is emerging as a promising solution for heavy-duty applications where range, payload and operational flexibility are critical. In 2021, Toyota Motor Europe set out to accelerate the deployment of fuel cell technology in commercial vehicles by integrating its hydrogen fuel cell systems into heavy-duty truck platforms.
To support this ambition, Toyota was looking for an experienced engineering partner with expertise in vehicle conversions, advanced mobility technologies and complex system integration. Thanks to its proven track record in vehicle electrification and innovation projects, VDL ETS, together with VDL Special Vehicles, was selected to support the development and integration of these next-generation hydrogen-powered trucks.

Integrating a fuel cell system into a commercial vehicle requires careful coordination of multiple vehicle systems, including energy management, powertrain integration, controls and safety functions. Throughout the project, VDL ETS contributed its expertise in system engineering, vehicle integration and testing to ensure the technology could be successfully applied in a real-world transport environment.
A key factor in the success of the project was the flexible and solution-oriented approach of the project teams. Together with Toyota, VDL ETS continuously explored technical solutions, addressed integration challenges and optimized vehicle performance. The collaboration demonstrated how innovative technologies can be transformed into practical mobility solutions and helped pave the way for the wider adoption of hydrogen-powered transport. Today, the project serves as a strong example of how strategic partnerships can accelerate the transition towards sustainable, zero-emission logistics.
