Spierings
Strengthening functional safety in hybrid crane development

Spierings Mobile Cranes developed the SK487-AT3 eDrive (‘CityBoy’), the world’s first hybrid mobile crane. As part of bringing this innovative vehicle to market, Spierings aimed to further strengthen its approach to risk assessment and functional safety, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations while maintaining the highest standards of safety and reliability.

To support this objective, VDL ETS performed an independent review of the existing risk assessment process, with a specific focus on the functional safety of the crane’s powertrain. Through a structured gap analysis, VDL ETS evaluated how safety-related risks were identified, assessed, and managed throughout the development process.

Independent assessment and process improvement

The review provided valuable insights into the effectiveness of existing safety procedures and development guidelines. In addition to confirming a solid foundation, VDL ETS identified opportunities to further enhance testing methodologies, safety processes, and engineering practices.

Through close collaboration and a structured approach, VDL ETS helped Spierings strengthen its internal processes and support future vehicle developments. The project demonstrates the value of combining independent safety expertise with practical engineering experience to achieve continuous improvements in functional safety and product quality.
