VDL ETS contributed to the sustainability of the iconic Sinterklaas Express of Het Kasteel van Sinterklaas in Helmond by converting the train from a conventional combustion engine to a fully electric vehicle.
Originally powered by a 1977 Volkswagen Beetle engine, the train was modernized through the integration of an electric drivetrain, battery system, newly developed dashboard and additional safety features. This transformation allows the Sinterklaas Express to operate quietly, efficiently and without local emissions while maintaining its familiar appearance and role in the annual festivities.

Electrifying an existing vehicle requires more than replacing an engine. The available space, power requirements, weight distribution and vehicle controls all need to work together as one integrated system. VDL ETS was responsible for engineering and integrating the complete solution, ensuring reliable and safe operation during the busy event season.
The result is a fully electric Sinterklaas Express that operates quietly, produces no local emissions and is ready for many years of service. The project showcases VDL ETS' capabilities in engineering, battery integration, protobuild and testing, while illustrating how innovative technology can help preserve local traditions in a sustainable way.
